Active Unlock or Request-Based Unlock?

Two locks can look identical, carry the same model name and behave completely differently when a user tries to open them from the app. This page explains the difference, which versions do which, and how to make sure the quotation says the right one.

Three Versions, Two Behaviours

The ecosystem name on the box does not tell you which behaviour you are buying. The hardware generation does.

Version comparison
Tuya BluetoothActive unlock. The lock opens from the phone without touching it. Works within Bluetooth range; add a gateway for remote access.
TTLockActive unlock. Same behaviour, with stronger multi-user management, timed e-keys and access history for rental and property use.
Older Tuya Wi-FiRequest-based only. The lock has to be pressed or woken first, and only then does the app confirm the unlock.

A cheaper quotation is often cheaper because it is the request-based generation. That difference does not show up until a user tries to open the lock from the app, and by then the goods have shipped.

How Active Unlock Actually Works

The phone connects

The app connects to the lock over Bluetooth. With a gateway the connection is made through the network instead, so distance stops mattering.

The command is sent

The unlock command is sent from the phone to the lock. Nothing is pressed on the lock itself, which is the whole point of the feature.

The lock executes

The lock drives the mechanism and, on app models, writes the event to the access record.

When Request-Based Is Still Good Enough

Request-based is not a defective product; it is a different generation at a different price. It is workable when the person opening the lock is standing in front of it anyway and does not mind pressing it first.

  • A single user opening a padlock they are already holding
  • A site where the lock is at the door the user is walking up to
  • A cost-driven order where the app is a convenience rather than the operating method

It stops working the moment the feature is remote: letting a cleaner in, opening a gate for a delivery, or letting a guest into a room before they arrive.

How to Tell Them Apart Before You Buy

Ask which hardware generation the quoted model uses, not which app it runs. Then test it on the sample: open the app and press unlock without touching the lock. If it opens, the version supports active unlock.

Where Request-Based Fails

In every case below the complaint lands on the buyer, not on the factory, which is why we make the difference explicit on the quotation.

  • Property managers granting access from another city
  • Hotel and serviced apartment guests told the door opens from the phone
  • Facility operators issuing timed access to contractors
  • Any order where the app is the reason the customer chose the product

How to Make Sure You Get the Right Version

  1. Write the requirement into the enquiry

One line is enough: the lock must unlock from the phone without touching the lock.

  2. Ask which generation, not which app

Tuya is sold in more than one hardware generation. The app name does not identify the behaviour.

  3. Test it on the sample

An active-unlock sample proves the version before a bulk order. Samples ship in 3-7 days.

  4. Check the quotation

We state the version on the quotation, including when the honest answer is that the cheaper model does not support it.

What a Gateway Adds

Bluetooth reaches the driveway, not the office in another city. A gateway puts the lock on the network, which changes what the lock can do.

  • Unlock remotely, including from another country
  • Issue timed e-keys that expire without anyone removing them
  • Review who opened the lock and when
  • Revoke access immediately when a contractor or tenant leaves

The gateway has to match the ecosystem, so the ecosystem is chosen first.

Which Models Use This

Active unlock applies to every app-connected model in the padlock line and to app models in the door lock line.

Version Questions

Three questions that come up once buyers understand the difference.

Version questions

Can an existing request-based lock be upgraded?

Sometimes. It depends on the hardware generation and the board inside the lock, so it is confirmed per batch rather than promised in general. Send the model code and the batch and we will say whether a firmware or board change is possible.

Does active unlock work without a gateway?

Yes, within Bluetooth range of the phone. A gateway is what extends active unlock beyond that range so the lock can be opened from another city.

Can the lock run on our own app instead?

For volume projects we support app customization and cloud-to-cloud integration, and our engineers can join a call with your developer. Custom development is quoted separately.

Ask Us to Confirm the Version in Writing

Send the model, the application and how the lock will be opened. We reply with the version, the MOQ and the lead time, and we will say plainly if the cheaper option cannot do what you need.

  • Reply within 12 working hours
  • Samples in 3-7 days, refundable against the first bulk order
  • Version stated on the quotation, not implied

PDF, JPG, PNG or DWG. A photo of the door edge with a ruler is usually enough to confirm the fit.

We reply within 12 working hours. Send a door drawing or a photo of your existing lock body and we will confirm the fit before production. File attachments up to 10 MB; if the upload does not go through, email the file to mike@bbdhome.com and quote your company name.
