IP65 vs IP67: Choosing a Waterproof Smart Padlock

Product Knowledge · Published 2026-10-06

IP65 and IP67 padlocks are both sold as waterproof, and buyers often treat the two as interchangeable. They are not, and the difference matters most exactly where the lock is hardest to replace.

What the numbers mean

Swipe the table sideways to see the full specification →

IP65Protected against dust and against water projected by a nozzle from any direction
IP67Protected against dust and against temporary immersion in water under defined conditions

Which one to choose

  • Covered outdoor lockers, gates and yards with rain exposure: IP65 is normally sufficient.
  • Wash-down areas, dockside or marine environments, low-lying yards that flood: IP67.
  • Indoor lockers and gyms: a standard rating is usually enough and costs less.

What the rating does not cover

  • Salt air and coastal corrosion, which is a material and finish question rather than an IP rating.
  • Physical damage to a seal from impact or a bent shackle.
  • A battery compartment left open, which defeats the seal entirely.

What to confirm with us

  1. The environment the lock will sit in, including whether it is washed down.
  2. Whether the rating you need is offered on the model you want, because not every model is available at both ratings.
  3. The shackle size needed for the locker or hasp on site.

Tell us the environment and we will confirm the rating

Describe where the lock is used, indoors or outdoors, and we will say which rating the model needs.
