Smart Lock Battery Life: What Actually Drains It

Product Knowledge · Published 2026-10-06

A lock that drains its battery in weeks instead of months generates a service call for every unit sold. The cause is usually a component or a firmware behaviour rather than the battery itself.

The usual causes

  • A board batch or component that draws current in standby.
  • A Wi-Fi connection held open continuously instead of waking on demand, which is why Bluetooth and gateway designs are easier on batteries than always-on Wi-Fi.
  • A keypad or reader left permanently lit.
  • Cheap batteries supplied locally rather than the cell the design assumed.

What to test before a bulk order

  1. Run a sample in the real environment: the same temperature, the same usage frequency and the same network conditions as the site.
  2. Ask for the standby figure for the specific model, not for the product family.
  3. Confirm what the lock does at low battery, because a warning that arrives too late is the same as no warning.
  4. Confirm the emergency entry method, such as a mechanical key or an emergency charge point.

If a site reports short battery life

Send the batch number and the usage pattern. A batch-wide fault is a component or firmware question and is handled as a claim with replacement or credit. A site where a few locks fail and the rest are fine is usually an environment or battery question, and it is worth checking before replacing hardware.

We do not publish a standby figure for a model we have not measured. The figure for the model you order is confirmed at quote.

Ask for the measured standby figure

Tell us the model and the usage pattern and we will confirm the standby figure and the low-battery behaviour.
